Arrive in Basilicata, a region still largely untouched by mass tourism, where landscapes shift between rugged mountains and luminous coastlines. Upon arrival, enjoy the convenience of your included rental car, giving you full freedom to explore this extraordinary territory at your own pace.

Drive towards Matera, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, famous for its Sassi, ancient cave dwellings carved into the rock. As you approach, the city reveals itself like a timeless stone sculpture, suspended between past and present.

Spend your first moments wandering through its atmospheric alleys, where every corner tells a story of resilience and beauty. The golden light at sunset transforms the stone into warm hues, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

Overnight in Matera.

Day 2 – Discovering Matera

Today, immerse yourself in the wonders of Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and European Capital of Culture 2019. With your guided tour included, explore the intricate network of caves, churches, and ancient homes carved into the calcarenite rock.

Learn about the fascinating history of the Sassi, once considered a symbol of poverty and now a refined and unique cultural treasure. Visit rupestrian churches adorned with ancient frescoes and enjoy panoramic viewpoints overlooking the dramatic canyon landscape.

In the afternoon, continue exploring at your own pace, discovering artisan shops, hidden corners, and quiet terraces. Matera’s atmosphere is deeply evocative, offering a rare glimpse into a way of life that has endured for centuries.

Overnight in Matera.

Day 3 – Cooking Experience in the Sassi

Experience the authentic soul of southern Italy through a traditional pasta cooking class set in a historic cave within the Sassi. This is more than a culinary activity—it is a journey into local traditions and family heritage.

Under the guidance of expert hosts, learn how to prepare fresh pasta using time-honored techniques, just as it has been done for generations. The setting itself—a stone cave—creates an intimate and unforgettable atmosphere.

After the preparation, sit down to enjoy your creations during a family-style lunch, sharing stories and flavors that reflect the essence of Basilicata. The rest of the day is yours to relax or continue exploring Matera’s enchanting streets.

Overnight in Matera.

Day 4 – Pisticci & Ionian Coast

Leave Matera behind and head towards Pisticci, a charming hilltop village known for its whitewashed houses cascading down the hillside, creating a striking visual contrast against the surrounding landscape.

After a brief exploration of the historic center, continue towards Marina di Pisticci, where the scenery changes dramatically. Here, long sandy beaches meet the calm waters of the Ionian Sea, offering a completely different side of Basilicata.

Spend the afternoon relaxing by the sea, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the wide, uncrowded coastline. This is the perfect place to unwind and embrace a slower rhythm of travel.

Overnight in Marina di Pisticci.

Day 5 – Pisticci & Sea Relaxation

Wake up to the gentle sounds of the sea and enjoy a full day dedicated to relaxation and exploration. Return to Pisticci village to stroll through its narrow streets, discovering local life and panoramic viewpoints over the surrounding countryside.

Back at the coast, take advantage of the beautiful beaches, ideal for swimming, sunbathing, or simply enjoying the tranquility of this lesser-known destination. The Ionian coast is appreciated for its authentic and unspoiled character, far from the crowds of more famous seaside locations.

You may also choose to explore nearby coastal areas or indulge in local cuisine at a seaside restaurant, where fresh seafood and regional flavors take center stage.

Day 6 – Pollino National Park

Today, venture into the wild landscapes of the Pollino National Park, the largest national park in Italy and a paradise for nature lovers. The scenery shifts once again, revealing mountains, forests, and vast open spaces.

The Pollino Massif is known for its ancient pine trees, dramatic peaks, and rich biodiversity. Explore scenic trails, breathe in the pure mountain air, and enjoy the sense of isolation and untouched beauty that defines this area.

This is a place where nature dominates and time slows down, offering a completely different perspective of southern Italy. Ideal for those seeking peace, authenticity, and connection with the environment.

Overnight in the Pollino area.

Day 7 – Maratea & Boat Experience

Continue your journey towards Maratea, often referred to as the “pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea”. Unlike the Ionian coast, this stretch is characterized by dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and crystal-clear waters.

Enjoy a boat excursion included, allowing you to discover the coastline from a unique perspective. Sail along rugged cliffs, explore sea caves, and access secluded beaches that are otherwise difficult to reach.

The contrast between the deep blue sea and the green mountains creates a striking landscape, making Maratea one of southern Italy’s most scenic coastal destinations.

Overnight in Maratea.

Day 8 – Maratea & Hidden Beaches

Start your day with a visit to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, perched high above Maratea and offering breathtaking panoramic views over the coastline. This peaceful spot is perfect for taking in the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Later, head to Cala Jannita, also known as the “black beach” due to its unique dark sand. This hidden gem is framed by cliffs and lush vegetation, creating an intimate and picturesque setting.

Spend your final day relaxing by the sea, soaking in the last moments of this unforgettable journey. Maratea’s charm lies in its authenticity, elegance, and untouched beauty.
